Officers from the Windsor Blood drive slated Donations needed in December LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - With influ enza activity increasing, American Red Cross Of ficials are urging healthy donors to give blood. “Blood and platelets can only be given by donors who are feeling well,” said Bernedette Jay of the American Red Cross. Jay also reminded would-be donors that getting a flu vaccine does not prevent a do nor from giving blood or platelets as long as the donor is symptom- free and fever-free. Red Cross officials do ask those who exhibits flu-like symptoms to make sure they are fully recovered before donat ing. Bertie County will have one blood drive next week. See DRIVE, A5 Police Department arrested a Greensboro man who is now facing multiple charg es in a trio of jurisdictions, thanks to officers in neigh boring Edenton locating the suspect. James A. Weitz, 28, is now facing two counts of felony fleeing to elude arrest, two counts of driving while li cense revoked, two counts of hit and run and resisting a public officer. The eventful afternoon began in Edenton, where citizens spotted the stolen vehicle. Police Chief Henry King Jr. attributes assistance for Weitz’s arrest to an alert eye from Edenton’s “See Some thing, Say Something” cam paign. “This whole thing comes from our citizens seeing something, doing the right thing,” he said. Individuals from near and far gathered at Edgewood Cemetery at 12 noon Saturday, Dec 14 for the annual nationwide Wreaths Across America event. The event deceased honors veterans by placing a live balsam wreath on his or her tombstone and saying their name as a way of paying tribute during the holiday season. Participant Joe Hale led the participants in prayer at the start of the event. Board alters policy Uniform changes set for 2020-21 LESLIE BEACHBDARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Uniforms are out. The Bertie County Board of Education unanimously voted to do away with uniforms for all schools begin ning with the 2020-2021 school year. Discussions about the change began dur ing the board’s October meeting. Bertie County Schools Superintendent Dr. Otis Smallwood suggested to the board to consider making changes to the current uniform policy. Currently students of Bertie County Schools are required to wear uniforms including kha ki, navy blue or black pants and polo shirts of specific colors depend ing on which school the student attends. See PDLICY, A5 Bazemore files for N.C. Senate seat in District 3 THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSDR - A Bertie County Commissioner has joined the race for N.C. Senate. Last week, Ernestine Byrd Bazemore filed to run for the seat being vacated by Erica D. Smith. In this edition — Bazemore is a two-term Bertie County Commissioner and a retired educator. She is seeking to replace Smith, a two-term incum bent, who is now seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat current ly held by Thom Tillis (R). Thus far, Bazemore is Church & Faifh A3 Classified B4 Opinion ; A4 Out & About A2 Parade A6 Sports B1 the only Democrat to file for the office. Republican Vance County Commissioner Thomas S. Hester Jr. has filed to seek the seat as well. The state senate seat is the only one being contested thus far locally. Only incumbent State Rep. Ed Goodwin has filed for the Republican nomination to retain his seat. No one else has filed. In Bertie County, only Dis trict 1 Commissioner Ronald D. Wesson has filed. District IV Commissioner John Trent is elected as an unaffiliated candidate, and therefore files by petition. Incumbent Democrat An nie Wilson has filed for re- election to her position as Register of Deeds. She is un opposed thus far. Filing will continue through noon on Friday.
